10 Questions to Ask Before You Buy a Manual Handling Course Online

4 min read

Buying a manual handling certificate online should take an afternoon, but a cert is only worth anything if it stands up when someone checks it: an employer, a site induction, a safety officer, an auditor. Plenty of pages will sell you a PDF in ten minutes. Fewer can tell you who signed it and why it's valid.

Here are ten questions worth asking any online provider before you pay. Use them on us, and on anyone else. If a provider can't answer these clearly, that tells you what you need to know.

The ten questions

1. Who signs the certificate, and what is their qualification? A named instructor who holds the QQI/NFQ Level 6 Manual Handling Instruction award, the qualification the HSA expects of anyone delivering manual handling training in Irish workplaces. "Certified by a logo" is not the same as "signed by a named, qualified instructor."

2. Is the training built around the Irish standard (S.I. 299/2007)? The course should reference Chapter 4 of Part 2 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, the actual law on manual handling of loads, not a generic international video.

3. Does it explain that training is one part of compliance, not all of it? An honest provider tells you the truth: under Regulation 69 your employer also needs a task-specific risk assessment. Training alone doesn't tick the whole box. A provider that pretends a video is "full legal compliance" for every situation is overselling.

4. Will I get the certificate the same day? Clear, upfront timing. If you need a cert for a site induction tomorrow, you should be able to see exactly how long the course takes and when the certificate lands.

5. Is the right type of course matched to my situation? A provider that helps you pick: a theory refresher if you've trained before or you're in a lower-risk role, or a full course with a practical element if you're new to manual handling or in a higher-risk role. The honest answer is "it depends on your situation," not "buy the cheapest one."

6. Can the certificate be verified by my employer? A certificate with a unique reference, the instructor's name and qualification, and the date, so an employer or auditor can confirm it's genuine.

7. Is my data handled properly? An Irish or EU provider, GDPR-compliant, with a clear privacy policy. Your name and details are on a compliance record, so it matters.

8. Is there real support if something goes wrong? A reachable human who can resend a lost certificate, fix a typo in your name, or answer a compliance question, not just an auto-responder.

9. Is the pricing honest and complete? One clear price, no surprise "certificate fee" at the end. You should know exactly what you're paying and what you get.

10. Does the provider stand over its claims? Verifiable specifics: a named instructor, a real qualification, a real Irish business, rather than vague badges and stock photography.

How we answer

We built manualhandlingtraining.ie to pass its own checklist:

  • Signed by a named QQI Level 6 instructor. Every certificate is signed by our instructor, who holds the QQI/NFQ Level 6 Manual Handling Instruction qualification.
  • Built on the Irish standard. Our content is written around S.I. 299/2007 and current HSA guidance, not a generic global course.
  • Honest about compliance. We tell you plainly that your employer's risk assessment is part of the picture, and we help you choose the course that fits your situation.
  • Same-day certificate. Complete the theory course online in under an hour and your certificate issues instantly.
  • Verifiable and supported. A unique certificate reference, a named instructor, and a real person on support who can fix or resend anything.
